Yesterday, DaSe Lab members participated in the inaugural meeting of the new Data Science and Security Cluster (DSSC) at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Wright State University. The cluster currently has 4 member labs which together comprise more than 40 people.
The participating labs currently are:
It was Spring 2012 when Krzysztof Janowicz invited me to the first GeoVoCamp he was to hold at the University of California, Santa Barbara. I completely didn't know what to expect. But trusting Krzysztof's ingeniuity with running events of all sorts, come I did.
Gratulations Kunal Sengupta on the successful defense of his PhD thesis. He will join Amazon as Software Development Engineer.
Thesis: Kunal Sengupta, A Language for Inconsistency-Tolerant Ontology Mapping. Dissertation, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Wright State University, 2015.

Proposals submitted on the basis of Raghava Mutharaju's thesis work on the application of "Distributed Reasoning over Ontology Streams" and "Scalable Querying and Reasoning on Semantic data" to Microsoft Azure and Amazon AWS Education grant were accepted.
Microsoft Azure provides access to its cloud services for a period of 1 year whereas Amazon AWS services are available for 2 years.
The 12th Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC 2015) had many interesting workshops and one among them was the workshop on Negative or Inconclusive Results in Semantic Web (NoISE 2015). The idea was to put out the negative results and more importantly discuss the lessons learned from such failures.
Pascal Hitzler is one of the guest edtiors of the recently released special issue of AI Magazine on "Semantics for Big Data".
Michelle Cheatham is co-organizing a vocabulary camp at University of Notre Dame, with the purpose of begining to develop vocabularies, micro-ontologies, best practice guides, examples, software, and services, that aim to foster semantic interoperability between different (Linked) Data sources using existing data sources from High Energy Physics Experiments at CERN as a targeted use case.

The 14th International Semantic Web Conference, ISWC2015, is set to be the usual major gathering point of the Semantic Web community. It will take place October 11-15 in Bethlehem, PA, and is expected to draw over 600 researchers from all over the world. The first two days are devoted to workshops, and several of them are going to be co-organized by DaSe Lab members:
We had quite a few awards coming our way this spring, and we are happy about the external acknowledgement we receive for our work.
From the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, the following awards were received.
